CBSE Class 8 English Description Writing

A description is a set of characteristics by which someone or something can be recognised. We can describe people, places and events. By describing them we make a sketch in words so that the reader is able to get a clear picture of the described object. A good description creates a clear mental image in the mind of the reader.

Describing People
While describing people we take care of the following points

•    Height tall, short, medium height
•    Build thin, underweight, plump, strong, sturdy, fat, overweight
•    Hair long, short, curly, black, brown, grey
•    Eyes dark, brown, big, small
•    Complexion dark, fair, wheatish, pale
•    Other features beard, moustache, bushy eyebrows, broken teeth, broad chin, thick lips, long face
•    Appearance good looking, charming, ugly, smart, handsome, beautiful
•    Qualities sincere, intelligent, diligent, warm, patient, soft spoken, selfish, kind, honest, innovative, confident, punctual

Describing Places
While describing a place the following points should be taken into consideration

•    Name of the place                                                               • Location
•    History
•    What does it look like (size, appearance, atmosphere)
•    What is special about the place                                        • What do you like there
•    Do you recommend other people to visit it?

Describing Events
While describing an event, the following points should be taken into consideration

•    Name of the event                                                        • When did it happen
•    What happened (Give details)                                   • Who were the people involved
•    Why was the event important

Recently a new principal joined your school. Your friends ask you to describe him. Write a description of your new principal.

My Principal

Answer:
Mr Rakesh Chopra , our new principal is a tall, fair young man. He has a moustache and is very handsome. He has a wheatish
complexion. He is highly qualified, kind and polite. Yet, he is a strict disciplinarian. He is punctual and diligent and inspires us to be fit and smart. He has a good command over the students and punishes habitual latecomers and indisciplined children. He is very kind as he helps the poor, needy children by distributing books, notebooks and other stationery material, free of cost. He is liked and respected by all.

Describe your mother to your school friends using the information given below.

My Mother  

Answer:
My mother is tall and fair. Even though she is 40 years old she is very beautiful and angelic. She is plump and strong. She is a post graduate in Economics and is a lecturer by profession. She is soft spoken and patient. She listens to my problems patiently and solves them. She is a very kind person as she goes out of her way to help people. She is the best mom in the world and I love her very much.

Answer:
Narendra Modi was born on 17th September, 1950, in Vadnagar. Indian politician and government official who rose to become a senior leader of the BJP in 2014, led his party to victory in elections to the Lok Sabha,after which he was sworn in as Prime Minister of India.Prior to that he had served (2001-14) as the Chief Minister (head of government) of Gujarat, in Western India. During his time as head of the Gujarat Government, Modi established a formidable reputation as an able administrator and he was given credit for the rapid growth of the state’s economy. In June 2013 Modi was chosen the leader of the BJP’s campaign for the 2014 elections to the Lok Sabha. After a vigorous campaign— in which Modi portrayed himself as a pragmatic candidate who .could turn around India’s underperforming economy- he and the party were victorious,with the BJP winning a clear majority of seats in the chamber. Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister on 26th May.

Mother Teresa had a impressive personality. She had a wrinkled, loving face with fair complexion. She had a small built.She was very frail and thin. She was 87 years old when she died. She always wore a smile on her face and had immense sympathy for the poor people, Her educational qualification was basic schooling. She had good knowledge of English language. Mother Teresa was not just a woman, she was an institution in herself. She was very conscientious in doing her work. She served the people of the slums in whatever way she could.
She taught the poor children the Bengali alphabet. She opened a dispensary and a home for the dying destitutes lying unclaimed on the road sides. She gave love and cared to the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who felt unwanted in the society.

The Taj Mahal

Answer:
The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is popularly known as ‘the Jewel of Muslim Art in India’. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is a fine example of Mughal Architecture. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was declared the seventh wonder of the world. It took 16 long years to build this beautiful monument. It is made up of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones. It attracts many tourists every year. It is so beautiful that nobody should miss seeing its beauty.

My House

Answer:
My favourite place in the world is my house. It is an important place to me as 1 have my childhood memories attached to it. I have grown up here and 1 have spent almost all my life here. It is a big house with a big lawn in front. In the summers there are a lot of flowers in the garden, which gives the house a good outlook. There are four bedrooms, a big drawing cum dining room and a big kitchen. I generally invite my friends over, during weekends and we sit and chat in the drawing room. All the rooms are big and airy and have attached bathrooms. The house has a very homely atmosphere. I feel that my house is the best place in the world.

Diwali

Answer:
The festival of Diwali is the most important festival celebrated all over India. It is a festival of lights. It is celebrated somewhere in October or November, 20 days after Dussehra. It marks the victory of good over evil as God Ram killed Ravan and returned home after 14 years of exile. This festival is celebrated with great pomp and show . People exchange gifts, which signifies love and respect for their relatives and friends. They illuminate their houses with diyas and candles. Children burn crackers and fireworks which look very beautiful. People pray to Goddess Laxmi for the well-being of their family and business.

Book Fair

Answer:
Book fair is organised in Pragati Maidan, Delhi every year. This year it was organised in the month of August. It was a very big affair as publishers from all over India exhibited their books. One could see and buy good books on practically any subject and topic that one could think of. People from Delhi and neighbouring areas came to attend this fair. It was a rare opportunity for book lovers and library owners as there was a variety of books from different publishers, all under one roof. The main attraction of the fair was availability of some special books and teaching aids which are not easily available in book shops.
